Today we combined our weekly meeting with the conference given by psychiatrist Eduardo Vera at the new El Barranco cultural space in Adeje, entitled The Divine, the Human and the Cruel. A Psychological Autopsy of the Passion of Christ – a scientific and spiritual study that from the field of forensic psychology offers an explanation of what happened there and, among many other things, shows us the importance of EMPATHY, a capacity with which 99% of human beings are born, but which we need to nurture and cultivate so as not to lose it, thereby avoiding joining that 1% of people who are unfortunately born with a biological inability to feel something in the face of a fellow human's suffering, and which can only be attempted to be mitigated through education and codes of conduct, but which even so sometimes cannot prevent some of them from becoming narcissistic psychopaths who in extreme cases have turned into evil dictators or serial killers. At ROTARY we know full well the importance of EMPATHY, and that is why we practise and cultivate it every day, and the best example of this is our Solidarity Food Bank, which is nothing other than the greatest expression of EMPATHY towards those who are having the hardest time, and that is why we have not in vain named it SOLIDARIDAD ESPERANZA DE LOS PUEBLOS (Solidarity Hope of the Peoples), a clear statement of good intentions that we preach by example.
