Betting on the future The Presidential Collar of the Rotary Club Tenerife Sur carries great weight. Surely because of the legacy of those 35 men and women who have worn it since 1983. They have all been and are people of good will, great Rotarians but also great businesspeople and professionals who contributed decisively to changing the south of Tenerife, socially and economically. Of the 35, 18 remain linked and are the pillars of our club, the guarantee that things will continue to be done well and the mirror in which those of us who have recently arrived and those yet to come will always look. Just a few months ago, the first president of this Club, Don Julio Marco Bazán, passed away; we will always remember him with affection and appreciation. The path of our club has been well charted for many years and I will not be the one to try to change course. At most, I will try to maintain it. Our projects are clear and this year we will focus even more, if possible, on what we can best do for our society: Help create a better future. And this can only be achieved by helping our children and young people. In a society like ours, which receives 6 million tourists a year, not a single child should go without food. Not a single child should be left without books to study. It simply cannot be. Young people with excellent secondary school grades cannot have difficulty accessing university for economic reasons. Talent has no price! One child, one meal, one book and the scholarship programme have been our main service projects in recent years and will continue to be so. This year we are also joining the joint project for the construction of a children's playground and study area at La Candelaria Hospital. Of course we will continue to be attentive to many other needs that arise from time to time. Wherever there is an neglected elderly person, a victim of gender violence, an abandoned animal or a charity in need of help, there will always be a Rotarian willing to lend a hand. Here and around the world. At the international level too, changes and new developments are approaching in Rotary International's action. The fight against Polio is practically won, with only a few small pockets left in very conflictive areas, so Rotary, in my view very rightly, will focus on drinking water supply difficulties in many parts of the world as the main problem to tackle in the coming years. Our proximity to Africa obliges us to be attentive to this issue and to be at the service of Rotary International should the opportunity arise to provide some kind of support to this cause. The Rotary International motto for this year is "Be the Inspiration". For someone like me who has been connected to the world of entertainment and music in particular all my life, I cannot but be delighted with the slogan chosen by the new RI president. There is nothing more inspiring than music and the arts in general, except perhaps the work of serving others. Being the inspiration is the key to going beyond what is in our hands. If we are able to inspire others with our attitudes, activities and projects, we will achieve much more important results. And if we manage to inspire the young, then the work will be worth double. That is why this year we have decided to create the Young Solidarity Award, endowed with €3,000 and aimed at young people or groups of young people who carry out social activities or projects at provincial level. We need to open up Rotary to society. To inspire companies, associations and institutions too and to try to do projects together. Sharing responsibilities and recognition is a sign of maturity and a necessity in the times we live in. We wish our colleagues in Tenerife who will have responsibilities in the District this year, such as Virginia, Cristina and Joaquín, every success in their work and needless to say the RCTS is at their disposal for whatever they need. To the members of the other Clubs and their new presidents, Elba, José Carlos, Gustavo and Elena, we wish them a very enjoyable presidential year and I invite and encourage them to work together for the good of this land that has given us so much. To all my colleagues and friends of the Rotary Club Tenerife Sur I thank you for your support and commitment and remind you that the strength and responsiveness of our club depends on the unity of the group. Ours is an extraordinary group. Because it is a group of extraordinary people. The head of the group rotates every year, but the core, the heart and the muscle remain unchanged. And that is who we are, the 33 members of the Rotary Club of Tenerife Sur. With you, everything; without you, nothing.
